PCB Conformal Coatings

Protecting printed circuit boards from harsh environmental working conditions is critical to avoid malfunctioning and product failure. Conformal coatings are applied as a thin layer across the surface of the board to cover all components and delicate wiring.

CHT’s silicone conformal coatings are popularly used in electronic applications because they adhere well to most components and substrates, maintain physical properties in extreme temperatures, are contaminant & corrosion resistant, and flow easily around components.

Most conformal coatings are clear, and many formulations have a UV indicator to enable easy visual quality control inspection under an ultraviolet light source. Their cure systems vary and include air drying, heat cured and UV cured.

Industries: Electronics, Aerospace, Automotive, Defence/military sectors, Marine, Solar/energy

Types of Conformal Coatings

CHT offers two types of conformal coatings:

VOC Free Silicone Coatings

These one-component silicone coatings are formulated using either Addition cure technology for heat cured coatings or Condensation cure technology for room temperature cure (RTV) using atmospheric moisture.

Key properties:

  • Wide operating temperature range (-55 ºC to + 200 ºC)
  • Room temperature or heat cure
  • Low viscosity
  • 100% solids (no harmful solvents)
  • Excellent adhesion to many substrates
  • Low odour
  • RoHS compliant
  • Not flammable
  • Workable just after touch dry time without fire risk

Acrylic Conformal Coatings

CHT’s solvent acrylic system is air drying and ideal to use where there may be a need to rework components on the PCB board after coating. It is possible to solder through this coating and easily remove it using a suitable cleaner.

Key Features

  • Meets requirements of MIL-I-46058C and IPC-CC- 830
  • Removable with solvent cleaner for rework
  • Temperature range -55 to +130 C
  • RoHS compliant
  • Can be soldered through without releasing toxic gas

Both silicone and acrylic coatings can be applied by spraying, dipping or brushing.
